The SFU Community Trust wished to create a facility for 3- to 5-year-olds that targets the highest standards of green design and integrates the most current ideologies of creative childcare. The new Centre is targeting the “Living Building Challenge” accreditation. To meet the challenge the building: generates more energy annually than it uses, harvests from rainwater more water than it uses, is free of toxic materials, treats and recycles its own black water on site, obtained the majority of its materials from within a 400 kilometer radius, and cost less to construct than a conventional childcare facility.
