Gwynne Pugh Urban Studio was selected to complete a full façade project for four buildings at the corner of Long Beach Blvd. and Anaheim St. in Long Beach. The design improvement to this urban pedestrian area (directly across from the rail line) will provide significant visual and aesthetic improvements and in turn, upgrade, strengthen and unify the block to ultimately encourage shoppers to utilize this commercial area. The project is funded by a Community Block Development Grant and limited in budget. With this in mind, Urban Studio’s design vision aimed to create a unifying vision that makes a strong statement and strengthens the commercial area, while keeping in mind the existing structures’ current state, and the project’s tight budgetary and time constraints. The design includes new paint and repair, introducing color and public art to liven up the façade at the pedestrian level. Organizing canopy elements are made of metal for durability and easy maintenance.
