Hertford Road House

HERTFORD ROAD LONDON
The project consists of the development of a narrow brownfield site in East Finchley. Overlooked by both neighbours, securing planning consent for any kind of building immediately raised the issue of obscuring their rights of light.

The solution to this proposal was to partially submerge the house along the length of the site so that the roof was no higher than a traditional six-foot garden fence. The house is thus partially buried over its two-storey height. Courtyards were introduced to admit light and create external spaces. A sedum roof covers the whole of the roof surface.

A zero piling method was used in the construction of the building to enable the retaining walls to abut the very edges of the site.
