AECOM, in association with zaha hadid architects (as consultants) have been appointed to design al wakrah, the 2022 FIFA World Cup Stadium Architecture in the precinct in qatar, just south of doha. the site is rich with cultural heritage which is expressed through the traditional islamic architecture–distinctive mosques and archeological sites–found in the region. the sporting complex has been conceived to visually represent an oasis, embracing the cultural heritage of the host city, while heightening fan experience. constructed on a modular design, the arena will have a maximum seating capacity of accommodating 45,120 spectators during FIFA world cup matches–the permanent lower tier housing 25,500 seats, with the modular upper tier will have 19,620 seats. additional programs will include an aquatic center and other sporting facilities, along with a spa and retail space. in response to its location and climates experienced there, the project will see the integration of cooling technology systems, with climate-control requirements to establish renewable energy production. Work is set to commence immediately. ‘we are delighted to be involved with the 2022 FIFA world cup program and to support the qatar 2022 supreme committee,’ said AECOM chairman and chief executive officer john m. dionisio. ‘this is an exciting time for qatar, and our global team of forward-thinking sports experts is well equipped to meet the challenges that a project of this caliber demands.’ work is set to commence immediately. zaha hadid has also recently won the bid to realize the new japan stadium which is set for completion in 2018, in time to host the 2019 rugby world cup.
